Swedish Culture: About Getting in Touch with Swedish People
Ein Post aus unserer FB Exchange Students Group von einem Schweden:...Swedes may be closed, but that's just how they are: if you talk to them, you'll realize that they are often eager to help!
For example if you are carrying something really heavy and you'd need help, few Swedes would stop and ask if you needed any help (as that would mean that you wouldn't be able to handle the situation by yourself: in a way that could be offensive. Sweden is very individualistic!), but if you asked someone walking past you for help they would likely oblige and probably be happy for being able to help you.
Think of Swedes as being really, really shy, and often scared shitless that they might offend someone. The solution for Swedes is to find close friends and to get shitfaced so that mentality goes away when needed.
tl;dr: the reason you aren't talking to Swedes isn't because they are being racist or something (and hell, even the 5% part of the population that is vehemently anti-immigration might have a pizza place immigrant 'friend' :)) but because they are shy and afraid of offending you.
...
Another quote: " Swedes need an excuse to talk to somebody... so just stand next to a sign or something and wait for people passing by, so you can start talking to them by asking something about the sign..."
